Growth plan for Recess, 6 Oct 2026
Scale spend. Hold CAC.
Recess already has a $26.99 sampler and five flavors to open with. The plan tests many creator ads against one number to protect, a target CAC of $15.84, and kills losers early before spend scales.

- Target CAC
- $15.84
- New ads a week at peak
- 20
- Creators live by week six

01 The number
One number to protect: $15.84 CAC on a $26.99 sampler
The one number to protect is a target CAC of $15.84. It is the guard line: 0.6 of a $26.40 ceiling, built from a $33 average order, 40% margin and one repeat order. Those inputs are guesses until week one replaces them.
Protect
Target CAC: $15.84 on a first purchase
Ceiling = average order × margin × (1 + repeat orders): $33 × 40% × (1 + 1) = $26.40. Guard line = 0.6 × $26.40 = $15.84. Across the ranges: $7.08 to $53.99.
Three moves
- Test the $26.99 Mood Greatest Hits Sampler against full flavor packs at $32.97, one variable per test.
- Kill losers early: any ad that sits above $15.84 CAC after its test spend is paused.
- Report daily CAC, so spend moves only when the number holds.

02 Variety
Ads must carry five flavors and one calm mood, not one hook
Each ad concept has to carry one product, one price and one feeling. Recess has flavors, samplers and a powder line, so a concept shows what is in hand, why it fits the day, and ends on one offer. Calm Cool Collected is a feeling to earn in the first seconds, not just a title.
| Reason to buy | Proof you already have | Ads (proposed) |
|---|---|---|
| Hemp + adaptogens | sparkling water infused with hemp & adaptogens for calm & clarity | 6 |
| Cocktail taste, alcohol-free | tastes & feels like your favorite cocktails without the consequences | 4 |
| Samplers for the undecided | can’t pick a favorite flavor? we made samplers for people like you | 3 |
| A press line on Recess | simultaneously relaxes my body and gives me this low-key productivity buzz | 2 |
| Afternoon coffee swap | a better-for-you alternative to replace your afternoon coffee | 1 |
| Why we made Recess | we all have too many tabs open in our browsers & our brains | 1 |
| Gift with a digital note | is this a gift? add a digital note | 1 |
| Total | The ad concepts tab | 18 |

Each row is a reason to buy that the brand already has proof for. The count is how many of the ads carry it: a reason with a single ad is a bet, not a pattern, and the next batch of concepts moves toward the reasons that win.
03 Disturbances
Seven risks, from shipping limits to health wording
| Disturbance | Likelihood | Impact | Owner | Gate (proposed) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sparkling water cannot ship to Alaska, Hawaii, Idaho, Mississippi or Puerto Rico | Med | Med | Me | Zero spend reaches excluded locations in the daily report |
| Ad copy drifts past Recess's own wording on hemp, magnesium and adaptogens | Med | High | Your team | Every ad line matches the claims sheet before launch; zero unapproved lines go live |
| Delivery takes 2-7 business days, so first-week buyers may doubt the order | Low | Med | Both | Delivery window shown on every landing page; refund requests tracked in the weekly report |
| Tracking gaps hide true CAC, so spend scales on bad numbers | High | High | Your team | Purchase events match order counts before spend rises past the first $3,000 week |
| Creator onboarding slips behind the two-a-week plan | Med | Med | Me | Ten creators live by week six; count checked every week |
| The $26.40 ceiling rests on one repeat order, and subscriptions may not repeat | Med | High | Both | Monthly cohort shows repeat orders, or the ceiling is cut until it does |
| Mood and Zero Proof lines compete for the same budget and blur the message | Med | Low | Me | Each concept names one line; mixed ads are cut after the first test round |
Scores are my read from outside the company, re-scored in week one with your data. Each risk has one owner and one gate that can be checked with a number, so nobody has to argue about whether it happened.
04 The ceiling
The ceiling is $26.40, and we spend under $15.84
| Line | Value | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Average order | $33 (range $13.49–$39.99) | Assumption Range from the site product prices (Published); the midpoint is a guess |
| Gross margin | 40% (range 35–45%) | Assumption Replace in week one |
| Repeat orders after the first | 1 (range 0.5–2) | Assumption Replace with cohort data in week one |
| Margin per customer, all orders | $26.40 | Calculated Average order × margin × (1 + repeat orders) |
| Guard line for CAC | $15.84 | Calculated 0.6 × the margin per customer |
The math, with the assumed lines
Ceiling = average order × margin × (1 + repeat orders): $33 × 40% × (1 + 1) = $26.40. Guard line = 0.6 × $26.40 = $15.84. Across the ranges: $7.08 to $53.99.
Range across the assumptions: $7 to $54.
The $33 order and 40% margin are guesses, and so is one repeat order. The $26.40 ceiling follows from them. Week one replaces them with your real order value, margin and repeat data.
The ceiling is a range, not one number: the most a new customer can cost before shipping and packaging, which I do not have. Replace the guessed lines with yours and every figure below recalculates.
05 Test ramp
Six weeks of tests cost $24,000, ramped week by week
| Week | New ads × budget / ad (proposed) | Weekly test spend | Cumulative | Creators posting | CAC target (proposed) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 12 × $250 | $3,000 | $3,000 | 0 | $16 |
| 2 | 12 × $250 | $3,000 | $6,000 | 2 | $16 |
| 3 | 12–20 × $250 | $4,000 | $10,000 | 4 | $16 |
| 4 | 12–20 × $250 | $4,000 | $14,000 | 6 | $16 |
| 5 | 20 × $250 | $5,000 | $19,000 | 8 | $16 |
| 6 | 20 × $250 | $5,000 | $24,000 | 10 | $16 |
Weeks 1 and 2 run 12 ads each at $250, so $3,000 a week. Weeks 3 and 4 run 12–20 ads for $4,000. Weeks 5 and 6 run 20 ads for $5,000. That is $24,000 of tests in total, and spend rises only where CAC holds.
The math. Week 1: 12 × $250 = $3,000; Week 2: 12 × $250 = $3,000; Week 3: 16 × $250 = $4,000; Week 4: 16 × $250 = $4,000; Week 5: 20 × $250 = $5,000; Week 6: 20 × $250 = $5,000. Total $24,000 (96 ads × $250). A range such as 12–20 counts as its midpoint.
Weeks one and two test what the brand already has, rewritten per reason to buy. From week three, creator videos enter paid only after they beat their own account median. A range of new ads counts as its midpoint in the spend column.
06 Volume
More concepts means more winners for the Mood line
At 20 concepts I guess 2 winners and $18,000 added; at 80 concepts, 8 winners and $72,000. Win share and spend per winner are guesses, so volume lowers CAC only if winners hold under $15.84.
| Concepts tested / month | Hit rate (assumed) | New winners / month | Spend each winner holds (assumed) | Added spend at target CAC |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 20 | 10% | 2 | $300 / day | $18,000 / month |
| 40 | 10% | 4 | $300 / day | $36,000 / month |
| 60 | 10% | 6 | $300 / day | $54,000 / month |
| 80 | 10% | 8 | $300 / day | $72,000 / month |
The math. 20 concepts × 10% = 2 winners × $300 × 30 days = $18,000 a month; 40 concepts × 10% = 4 winners × $300 × 30 days = $36,000 a month; 60 concepts × 10% = 6 winners × $300 × 30 days = $54,000 a month; 80 concepts × 10% = 8 winners × $300 × 30 days = $72,000 a month.
The hit rate and the spend each winner holds are placeholders. The first thirty days of tests replace them with real numbers, and the table is recalculated the same day.
07 Allocation
The $100,000 is split by what feeds the sampler offer
- Scaling spend on winners that hold under the guard line
- $40,000
- 40%
- Meta tests across sampler, flavors and powders
- $25,000
- 25%
- Creator pay and product
- $25,000
- 25%
- Landing pages and tracking fixes
- $10,000
- 10%
Winners earn the largest share only after they hold under $15.84; the $100,000 budget is split by evidence, not spent up front.
The math. 40% × $100,000 = $40,000; 25% × $100,000 = $25,000; 25% × $100,000 = $25,000; 10% × $100,000 = $10,000. Sum 100% = $100,000.
This split is a proposal. It moves toward scaling as winners prove out, and toward testing when fatigue shows.
08 Channels
Meta opens first; Amazon follows once the site converts
| Channel | Open when (proposed) | Why wait |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Week one | Creator ads for the sampler and flavor packs test fastest here. |
| TikTok | Two Meta concepts hold under $15.84 CAC | Creator videos already made can run again there. |
| Amazon | The site converts under $15.84 CAC | Recess already promotes up to 30% off on Amazon, so shoppers may already search there. |
| The first purchases arrive | Subscriptions ship every 2, 4 or 8 weeks, so reminders and repeat orders feed payback. | |
| Search | Meta shows which flavor names people look for | Brand and flavor searches catch buyers the creator videos warm up. |
A channel opens when its condition is true, not when the calendar says so. Until then the budget stays where the CAC is earned.
09 Payback
Payback decides: stop when CAC passes the $26.40 ceiling
Payback is the real constraint. At a CAC of $10 the first order pays back with $16.40 left. At $15, repeat orders must cover it, leaving $11.40. At $30 or $35 it never pays back, so I stop: that leaves −$3.60 or −$8.60.
Cumulative margin per customer, order by order, before CAC: $13.20, $26.40.
| CAC (scenario) | First-order margin | Year-one margin | Left after CAC | Payback |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| $10 | $13.20 | $26.40 | $16.40 | First order |
| $15 | $13.20 | $26.40 | $11.40 | After repeat orders |
| $30 | $13.20 | $26.40 | −$3.60 | Never: stop |
| $35 | $13.20 | $26.40 | −$8.60 | Never: stop |
The math. CAC $10: $26.40 − $10 = $16.40 left; pays back: First order; CAC $15: $26.40 − $15 = $11.40 left; pays back: After repeat orders; CAC $30: $26.40 − $30 = −$3.60 left; pays back: Never: stop; CAC $35: $26.40 − $35 = −$8.60 left; pays back: Never: stop.
Read each row left to right: the margin of the first purchase, the margin over the whole horizon, what is left after CAC, and the purchase on which the CAC is earned back. A scenario that never pays back is a stop, not a test.
10 Scope
Scope covers Recess ads and creators, not fulfillment
Covers
- Meta ad testing across the sampler, flavor packs and powders
- Creator recruiting, briefs and weekly content flow
- A claims sheet drawn from Recess's own wording
- Daily CAC, weekly learnings, monthly cohort payback
Doesn’t
- Event tracking build; I spec it, your team implements it
- Fulfillment, shipping rules and refund handling
- Amazon and wholesale listing management
- Product, flavor or pricing decisions
What this plan covers is what I can change inside the ad account and the creator program. Everything outside it is named on the right so nobody assumes it is handled.
Gates, written before spend, so stopping isn’t a negotiation.
| Day | Keep going if (proposed) | Stop or change if |
|---|---|---|
| Day 14 | Purchase events match orders and one concept holds under the $15.84 guard line | Tracking still unmatched, or no concept under $26.40 CAC |
| Day 30 | Blended CAC at or under $15.84 and creators on track for ten live by week six | CAC above $26.40 for two straight weeks |
| Day 60 | Winners hold under $15.84 as spend rises, and repeat orders show in the cohort | CAC drifts above $26.40 at higher spend |
| Day 90 | Cohort payback clears the $26.40 ceiling on one repeat order | Payback never arrives at the current CAC |
Each gate is checked on its day with the numbers in the daily and weekly reports. If the stop condition is true, the spend stops and nothing renews until we talk.
What exists, what’s missing, and the order that’s forced.
| Piece | Exists today | Missing | Forced order |
|---|---|---|---|
| Creative | A $26.99 sampler and five flavors to build ads around | Hooks tested one variable at a time | 1st |
| Creators | Happy Hour Sampler at $26.99 to send to creators | A roster and briefs | 1st |
| Claims sheet | Own wording: magnesium, adaptogens, electrolytes in a 3-in-1 powder | One approved list of lines for every ad | Week 1 |
| Landing pages | Free shipping to most continental US addresses | Pages matched to each ad concept | 2nd |
| Reporting | A public catalog with 41 priced products | Purchase events matched to orders | Week 1 |
The order is forced on purpose: creative and creators come first because they are what moves CAC, and everything else waits for that data.

Month one is where it starts.
Week one: I build the claims sheet from Recess's own wording, set up the first 12 ads around the $26.99 sampler, brief the first creators and spec the tracking events with your team. Daily CAC reporting starts when spend does.
